Slimbox WordPress Plugin
WordPress plugin used to overlay images on the current page into neat Javascript-powered overlay popups.
This plugin includes the new Slimbox 1.64 javascript written by Christophe Beils and got transformed into a WordPress Plugin by me. Slimbox is a 7kb visual clone of the popular Lightbox JS v2.0 by Lokesh Dhakar, written using the ultra compact mootools framework. It was designed to be small, efficient, more convenient and 100% compatible with the original Lightbox v2.
Because Slimbox was designed to be 100% compatible with Lightbox, you can just replace the Lightbox 2 WordPress Plugin whit Slimbox Plugin and your Lightbox effects will work just as well as before.
Use the title attribute if you want to show a caption. Click on the images below for an example.
Installation
- Upload slimbox-plugin folder to the /wp-content/plugins/ directory.
- Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ menu in WordPress.
- Add a rel=”lightbox” attribute to any link tag to activate the lightbox, or rel=”lightbox[roadtrip]“ for image set.
- Optional: Use the
titleattribute if you want to show a caption. - If you want to add automatically the lightbox effect to your post’s images, open lighbox.php and remove the comment ‘//’ from lines 21 to 24.

- The Lightbox compatibility code is now fully optional. It s implemented in a few lines using the new API and a filter function.
- API: The main entry point has been renamed from “Lightbox†to “Slimboxâ€
- API: Lightbox.show() and Lightbox.open() have been merged into Slimbox.open()
- The Slimbox distribution now includes mootools, an example page and a Readme file.

Just thought I’d let you know that this plugin generates a JavaScript error in Internet Explorer 6 and 7 and renders the page unloadable. This is obviously a very serious bug and needs to be addressed. For more info, please read my blog post about this:

Hi! I tried this plugin, but it doesn’t work for me. In IE7 nothing happens at all, and in Firefox usually I only get a white box. Sometimes I see the picture as well, but without the loading animation and the exit x.

For those of you experiencing problems it could quite possibly be conflicting with another plugin you have installed.
Slimbox worked perfectly for me until I activated the wp-grins plugin then all I got was a white box loading, no photo. The minute I deactivated wp-grins, it worked again.

this is an awesome plugin, because
a) it’s slim
b) it uses mootools, which is perfect for me.
however,
it does not work very well in ie6 for me. image and box appear but they are always at the top of the page (the top where the printer starts printing) disregarding whether the user has scrolled down. So, if you scroll the page by “one screen”, then no overlay is shown. if you scroll up, you find it hanging at top.
Seems a bit strange, but i have found no solution yet, do you?

The lightbox seemed to work perfectly but after deleting some images and then running the lightbox again, the deleted images (still on the server, but removed from the page) are still loading like there is some sort of cache.
How can I clear it so it only loads the images I have showing?
OK, I even deleted two images from the uploads folder on the server, reloaded the page and the two images are still showing up!
I tried changing the link from lightbox[portfolio] to lightbox[portfolio071125] and still no change!
My mistake! I deleted the thumbnails and thought I’d deleted the links to the images, but I hadn’t – oops!
It would be good if the slimbox resized images to suit the browser window size ~:0)

I really liked your plugin, but after upgrading to WordPress 2.31 it doesn’t seem to work anymore. Did you experience similar issues? Any idea how to fix it?
I am running WP 2.3.1 and Slimbox and it’s working fine: the only time it’s stopped working was when the Google Ads. had not fully loaded and therefore not all scripts had fully loaded, including slimbox (it looks like the page load had timed out).

I really would like to use this plugin, I’m following the directions specifically, but when I put it in, I have the same problem as others… it just takes me to a new page with the photo, no lightbox. It’s almost as though the plugin is not working.

Hey JD,
maybe you’re just too fast in clicking the links of the pictures. Wait until the browser says “finished” or similar (depends on browser, i’d say) in its statusbar. Then all scripts and graphics are fully loaded.
THAT is the time you can click the pictures. If you click them earlier (when the browser’s statusbar says something like “reading this and that”), the links work just as usual: they lead you to another page: the picture in its original size.

For some reason you have to make sure the plugin resides in exactly /wp-content/plugins/slimbox/
I had mine in the folder /slimbox-plugin because that was the folder it was extracted to.
The plugin looks in that folder for your .js files, thats why you need to name it properly so they can be found.

First of all: thanks for the great little plugin – I guess SlimBox is the best of all Lightbox derivates. Being able to use this thing for the WordPress-site that I’m currently building is a real pleasure. However, it took me a whole hour to find out why I couldn’t get it to work. The cause for the error was a jquery.js that my WordPress theme uses to slide the sidebar. As soon as I commented the line out of my header, Slimbox worked just fine. I don’t know if this “bug” has been mentioned here before… if not, my advice could possibly help someone finding out why Slimbox fails.

I suddenly got a problem with this, it loads, but stops and I see no picture. It happens the same here. I guess its my computer. At home it worked after I removed my antivirus and spyware program. Not sure which of them blocked it, but it worked after I removed them

Another question: Is there a way to resize the pictures when they are clicked? If I send a picture from my phone it is 2Mega pixel. If you click in it, then becomes bigger than some screens. Is there a way to limit the size to 640 for instance?

Hello, thank you for a very nice plugin. I experience an interesting phenomenon whenever browsing my photos when they pop up with slimbox – if there are more than one in the series, the image ‘splits’ so that the left half of the image repeats itself on the right hand side. This phenomenon disappears if I place my cursor over the ‘next’ area of the image. I was wondering if you were familiar with this bug and if there is a work-around?

Sorry, let me clarify. The situation disappears when I place my cursor in the right half of the image in the set. Also, strangely, this doesn’t happen when I check out your example, so I wonder if I am doing something wrong on my blog.

I’ve been playing with WP2.5, and found your plug-in. It is really a great little add-on… After playing with media.php and page-template.php in WP2.5, I can now use the image uploader built into 2.5 and a “gallery2″ shortcode and everything gets displayed with slimbox. The one thing I’d love to see now is a way of adding the EXIF decoding functions from WP2.5 into the slimbox display… Is there a way of passing a string to slimbox and getting it to display below the image? I’d also love to have the ability to put in a button for a link to the full resolution image for downloads…

Yes, there is a bug in this plugin under IE6. It is an object name problem.
The black background loads and the first white space is painted. Then it halts. Clicking on the black background closes the page.
Clicking a second time, the background loads with the horizontal white space painted. Then it halts. Clicking on the backgrouns closes the page.
Clicking on the image a third time, the whole lighbox loads including the image, but with no close button.
It appears that something, perhaps, in the RETURN value that controls the loop for painting is generating an error under IE6.
There are at least three other people here having the same problem.

I’ve been using WP 2.5 and noticed a bit of a lag for the javascript to execute, not only that but the transition from clicking the thumbnail to the full image size there’s a long lag. I’m not sure what the issue would be. In my particular case, I’ve used .png and the file sizes range from 2.4kb to 200kb. On all of them, there is a lag. So not sure what the issue would be. Any advice would be helpful.

Your other plugin, Lightbox 2, didn’t work for me, but this one sure did.
The problem I had with a lot of the other lightbox plugins was that the shadow overlay would cover only the first screen (in Internet Explorer).

I tried this plugin on Firefox 3 (Beta 5) and it doesn’t display well, the picture displays beneath the post text.
Hope the plugin will work in final FF 3, but you might look at it.

I removed the ” from the regular expression, making:
return preg_replace(‘//i’, ‘‘, $content);
This is because wordpress inserts (sometimes? always?) ‘ instead of ” on the a href tags. So, I had some images that weren’t detected by your plugin…

The plugin works fine but when it is installed I cannot navigate from a single post to a WordPress page in IE7. IE raises an error and will not display the page. Works fine in Firefox. When I uninstall your plugin I can navigate from a single post to a page as expected.

Hi, thanks for a super plug-in. I enjoyed it quite a bit until it suddenly stopped working.
I have deactivated it now on my site, but I had two problems that I really think you should fix for your next release.
1st. The plug-in stopped working properly: The second picture I opened with Slimbox, in one session, and thereon, opened twice.
2nd. IE users couldn’t get access to my site from time to time. IE would state that an “illegal action” had taken place and go to a blank screen.

Thanks for Slimbox! Cool plugin.
I\\\\’m using it in conjunction with \\\\”WP Slimbox Reloaded\\\\” plugin which applies it automatically to all the pictures, but on the index page it creates separate arrays for different posts. Smart.
Anyway – while Slimbox works fine on the index page, it doesn\\\\’t work for some reason in the single pages.
Any idea? My blog is in Hebrew but code is international, right?

I’m still having problems displaying the caption texts in the Slimbox-gallery. If I put images to page using the WP’s [gallery]-tag, the captions appear fine. However if I drop the images as thumbnails to here and there in the text, the captions will not show up in the Slimbox-gallery (even thought all other functions work fine).
I’ve put the caption texts to both caption and title-field for the images.
It’s great plugin, I’m use it on my own blogs.
But there is a problem with another plugin – Optimize DB. It this plugin is active whet Slimbox doesn’t work.

Thanks Peppe for the great work you did with the Slimbox Plug-in. Unfortunately after the upgrade to the 1.3 version of your plug-in all my single-view pictures became galleries instead. This happened after line 19 to 22 where activated, as you suggest in your readme-file.
I solved the problem by reverting to the slimbox.php-code of version 1.2 (from line 19 onwards) where the preg_replace line for galleries is deactivated. Thereafter all was running as expected.

In case it may interess you, i’ve slightly modified it, to load the mootools libraries from the google content delivery network, instead from my website, to have faster downloads and more downloads in parallel.

For those wanting this great plugin to work with the built-in WordPress gallery functionality, a small change is needed.
Replace the entire line containing preg_replace (20?) with the following:
return preg_replace(‘//i’, ‘‘, $content);
You may also need to change
add_filter(‘the_content’, ‘slimbox_create’);
to
add_filter(‘the_content’, ‘slimbox_create’, 99);

But I have a problem with the standard gallery. If I insert several pics into a post as a gallery – how can I use the overlay effect here?

Because Slimbox was designed to be 100% compatible with Lightbox, you can just replace the Lightbox 2 WordPress Plugin whit Slimbox Plugin and your Lightbox effects will work just as well as before.
Hi.. Great work on this plugin.. I’m having a problem though.. I’m using it in combination with Add Lightbox and title (by ppalli).. It’s working fine but as soon as I activated your plugin, my drop down menu in my theme stopped working.. If you visit it right now, you will see that there are drop down menus from the main nav bar.. http://www.dglm.smoothspider.com.. But they disappear when your plugin is active I’d really love to use your plugin.. Any suggestions will be great. Thanks!

Hello. V. useful plugin. However, it doesn’t work on my client installation after activation and adding the rel=”lightbox” to an image link. You also say that commenting out lines 24-29 of lighbox.php will automate lightbox effects. There is no lighbox.php in the plugin folder and no lines 24-29 in slimbox.php. I can’t send you a link to the site because it’s running on MAMP on my Mac. Any help would be much appreciated and if it works, you’ll get your cup of coffee! Thanks. Sue

2. If I use such construction: , then at main page I see big thumb (not litle) and if I click on picture open a strange page: http://site.com/”http://site.com/images/picture1.jpg”

Seems to work fine, except for the automatic modification. I removed lines 19-22 in slimbox.php, but I still have to put the “lightbox” tag into each individual image. Does the automatic modification work only with future posts or already published posts? Thanks for a great plugin!

It works great in Chrome and Firefox. However in IE9 the images just open to a bland white page. Any ideas?
Experienced the same issue on IE9. Works fine on Safari, Chrome & Firefox.
